AI Visibility in ChatGPT: How to Measure It

TL;DR
Your AI visibility in ChatGPT comes from three places: model memory, cited sources in web search answers, and paid ads. Only the first two respond to content work.
OpenAI publishes no AI visibility report. You have to measure it yourself, with a fixed prompt set that you repeat.
Answers are unstable: there is less than a 1 in 100 chance of getting the same brand list twice. SparkToro & Gumshoe, 2026
Only 12% of URLs cited by ChatGPT also rank in Google’s top 10. Strong SEO does not guarantee AI visibility. Ahrefs, 2025
The GEO metrics that matter here are a dated presence rate and share of voice, not a screenshot.
Short answer: to measure your AI visibility in ChatGPT, write 10 to 20 buyer prompts that don’t name your brand. Run each one at least three times in a clean session. For every run, log whether your brand appears, its rank and whether ChatGPT links to your site. Track organic mentions and ads separately, and repeat every month.
The 3 sources of AI visibility in ChatGPT
Type | Where it comes from | Can content change it? |
Model memory | Training data, frozen until the next model | Slowly, through your footprint across the web |
Search answer | Live web search, with linked sources | Yes, this is where GEO has the most impact |
Ad | Paid placement, labelled as sponsored | No, it’s a budget line |
ChatGPT ads are rolling out to 31 European markets, including France. OpenAI says ads are clearly labelled and don’t influence answers. OpenAI, August 2026. If you count ads as organic mentions, your AI visibility numbers are wrong.
Prerequisite: let OpenAI read your site
A blocked page has no AI visibility. Check your robots.txt before you measure anything.
Bot | Role | If you block it |
OAI-SearchBot | Feeds ChatGPT search | Your pages drop out of sourced answers |
GPTBot | Collects content for model training | Your content stays out of future models |
ChatGPT-User | Opens a page when a user asks for it | robots.txt may not apply |
OAI-AdsBot | Checks ad landing pages | Only matters if you run ads |

Always allow OAI-SearchBot. Whether to block GPTBot is a business decision, not a technical setting.
How to measure AI visibility in 6 steps
Step 1: Write 10 to 20 decision-stage prompts
Use prompts like “best X for Y”, “X vs Y” and “alternatives to [competitor]”, and never name your brand. Use the same prompt set as your GEO strategy.
Step 2: Test in clean sessions
Log out, turn off memory and use the market’s language. For each run, note whether web search was on.
Step 3: Repeat every prompt at least 3 times
One answer tells you nothing, because brand lists change from one run to the next.
Step 4: Log 4 data points per run
Is the brand named?
Its rank in the answer
The context: positive, neutral or negative
Whether there’s a link to your site
Step 5: Separate memory answers from sourced answers
They have different causes and need different fixes.
Step 6: Date it and repeat monthly
AI visibility is a trend over time, not a single number.
Doing this by hand takes about an hour per engine each month. A GEO platform runs the same prompts across ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and AI Overviews every day, so you can compare months instead of screenshots.
The 2 GEO metrics to start with
Presence rate: the percentage of answers that mention your brand.
Share of voice: your mentions ÷ all brand mentions in the same set of prompts.
Presence rate tells you whether you have any AI visibility at all. Share of voice shows how much space you take compared with competitors. It often reveals competitors you didn’t expect, because models group brands by how the web describes them. Sentiment, source share and the AI Visibility Score come next. See the full list in our guide to GEO metrics.
A mention with wrong facts hurts your AI visibility instead of helping it. Here’s how to fix what ChatGPT gets wrong.
What your analytics will never show
Mentions without clicks leave no trace in your analytics.
The OpenAI pixel measures ad conversions only, not organic mentions.
Referral traffic captures only the small share of users who click. Here’s how to track AI-referred traffic in GA4.
That’s why you need to measure AI visibility directly.
How to improve your AI visibility
Once you’ve measured your starting point, your GEO strategy works on three levers:
Citable content: cite sources, add statistics and quote experts. These tactics improved visibility by up to 40% in the Princeton GEO study. KDD 2024
Third-party authority: earn mentions on the sites ChatGPT already cites.
Machine readability: put the answer in the first 60 words of each page.

FAQ
How do I check my brand’s AI visibility in ChatGPT?
Ask 10 to 20 buyer prompts without naming your brand. Run each one 3 times in a logged-out session and log whether your brand appears.
Which GEO metrics should I track first?
Start with presence rate and share of voice. Then add sentiment, source share and an AI Visibility Score.
Is there an official ChatGPT AI visibility report?
No. OpenAI doesn’t share which prompts mention a brand. You have to measure it yourself or use a dedicated GEO platform.
How does measurement fit into a GEO strategy?
Measurement is step 2 of a GEO strategy: you can’t prove any improvement without a baseline. See how to build a GEO strategy.
